4 Questions to Ask when buying a Mac…
And why the sales person doesn’t want you to ask them

1) How much RAM do I really need?
Profits on computers are pretty slim today. One way for sales people to make a bigger sales is by upgrading the computer to more RAM. Apple installs enough RAM in their Macintosh line for most people’s computing needs. RAM can always be upgraded later. You can save this money for fun applications. Then, if you find you’re getting bogged down you can upgrade.

2) Do I really need Apple Care?
Applecare is an extended warranty. Your Mac will come with a 1 year standard warranty that covers parts and labor. Apple care may be a good idea for your Macbook or Macbook Pro but you might want to think twice about the investment for you iMac or Mac Pro. They don’t tend to fail after the first year and you may already be in the market for a new machine by the time the machine does fail. Even if something does go wrong the most common failure is a hard drive. That will cost you about $50 for the part and $150 for labor. So really it’s a wash. Save the money for Apple Care and invest in a good offsite backup program. Checkout minnesotabackup.com for an easy way to secure your data.
Digital Brigade offers our clients a Brigade Care package where if your business computer is going to be down for more than 24 hours because of parts delay or some other reason, we will give you a loaner computer to keep you working. Now that is a real care package.

3) Can I get the best deal buying directly from Apple?
NO!! You will get a better deal buying from an Authorized Apple Reseller. Resellers like Digital Brigade are not allowed to advertise below what Apple calls MAP (minimum advertised pricing). But we often will give you a price break because you’re a good client or we just like you. Your best bet is with a reseller.

4) Should I pay more for the faster processor?
The upgrade to a faster processor often times doesn’t get you much more bang for you buck. All things being equal the faster processor will probably not make a difference in your computing experiencing. If you are doing a lot of video editing or multiple layered Photoshop work you may need more processing power (and RAM by the way) but if you’re doing office project, or simple page layout, email, and web browsing the you’re better off spending your money on a faster Internet connection or a nice leather laptop bag.
